7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland

By on 18. Dezember 2017

New Zealand has a lot to do, but especially the following 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland are much fun and money saving at the same time. Auckland is the most vibrant city in New Zealand and therefore has some really cool spots to see and activities to try out. Unfortunately most of them cost a fair bit of money. And because travelling is quite expensive over time, especially in Oceania, you should go for the free activities from time to time.

The 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland are a selection that works for everyone. Doesn’t matter what you are usually into, there are just some things you have to do when you come to Auckland and these 7 gratis ones belong to them. Auckland is New Zealand’s biggest city with over one million people. It lies in the north of the northern island. Because of the influences and modernity of New Zealand in general, this city is perfect short visit or longer stays.

Many people consider it to be one of the best cities in Oceania and I think so too. I was very impressed with the standards, but therefore the prices are very high, which is the main reason why I wanted to write this article about the 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland.

The second reason is that I wanted to save you some nerves and energy. I wrote this short backpacker guide, so that you don’t need to do anything but enjoying the cool sights. All of them are pretty much a MUST SEE anyway, so I would have to check them out anyway.

Because we Germans like to be effective, I do not only want to tell you about the sights, but also how to get there quickly and what route to take, so that you don’t need to spend the whole day traveling.

Regarding the route, I pretend that you start in the city, near one of the following three hostels, which is where most backpackers/ travellers start anyway:

Check out the Silo Park

Silo Park is a very nice place and the first highlight to check out from the 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland. It’s home of one of New Zealand’s most famous bars (Silo Bar). It also includes a large selection of DJ’s, food trucks, live music, entertainment and special events. Additionally people can enjoy a good movie at Auckland’s most known outdoor cinema or just catch up to have a couple drinks with friends right next to the lovely marina.

The park got its name from the six silos you can see on site. One of the silos is about 35m high and all of them have been used to store cement back in the days. Silo Park is a vibrant place, especially for young people, who want to sit back and enjoy Auckland’s prime location.

Distance: To get to Silo Park will take you less than 35 minutes (15 minutes by bicycle). Just walk down on Queen Street until Wellesley St. Turn left and walk past Victoria Park. Turn right from there and walk down Beaumont St. until the end. You can’t miss the park, just walk straight ahead.

Visit the Marina

The 2nd thing that’s on the list of the 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland is to go to the marina. The walk through the city centre is already really nice, because Auckland is pretty modern and has some impressive buildings to see. Often times you can even check out some reall cool events.

Down at the marina you will fall in love with the scenic view instantly. This tiny port is mainly built for smaller sailing boats and it’s easily one of New Zealand’s prettiest ones. The water is turquoise, which is quite uncommon for a marina. Usually you would expect dirty water, but not at Auckland’s port. It almost seems like you could swim in it 😉

Along the waterfront you’ll find many small restaurants and areas to relax. Some parts have free lounchers and benches to lay down on, so that visitors can enjoy the great view. Or you just go for a relaxing stroll along the promenade, which is also a great option.

Distance: Reaching the marina promenade will take you less than 10 minutes. Just walk east and you have the whole waterfront left of you.

Smell roses at Parnell Rose Gardens

The Parnell Rose Gardens, also called Dove Myer Robinson Park, has to be a part of the 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland, because it’s very lovely and it almost seems like a fairy tale to walk around this multi park complex. All the roses blossom from the start of summer until the end of autumn. Very pretty!

With more than 5.000 flowering bushes in all kind of colours and the awesome view onto Auckland’s marina bay, this park is a highlight for all romance loving people, who want to slow down and relax at one of the city’s best free spots.

Distance: About 2.5 km, which will take you about 30 minutes (10 minutes by bicycle). Just follow Urban Road 6, turn right at onto SH 16 and you can see Parnell Rose Gardens already.

Enjoy the view from One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill, also called Maungakiekie, definitely has to be on the list of the 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland. At peak it’s about 182m high and therefore one of Auckland’s highest spots. One Tree Hill is an important memorial sight for New Zealanders as well as the Maori.  This vulcano erupted about 28.500 years ago for the last time. During that time period all lava flows went various directions. They covered a land of 20km², which makes it the 2nd largest vulcanic field in Auckland.

There is a big obelisk on the top of the hill, which has been designed by Richard Atkinson Abbot in 1940. Back in the days it has also been a strategically valuable point for the Maori, because they could almost overlook entire Auckland and therefore have been able to observe and regulate the migrants, who wanted to go from the north further towards the south.

Definitely and nice sight to check out, especially during sunset 😉

Distance: 7.5km, which will take about 1h and 40min (30-40 minutes by bicycle). Walk down Gladstone Rd, turn right onto St Stephans Ave until Parnell Rd. Keep following Parnell Rd towards the south. At the end walk along Broadway and Manukau Rd until you reach Burger King, which is next to the northwestern entry of the park.

Climb Mt Eden

Visiting Mt Eden is another point from the 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland. New Zealand is a country, which developed through tectonic plate movements. The result is a country full of small and big vulcanos as well as mountain areas. Mt Eden is a small result of it. It’s a inactive vulcano in the middle of Auckland. It seems like the city has kind of been built around it. Interestingly the whole suburb is also called Mt Eden, named after a George Eden, the first earl of Auckland.

View from Mt Eden onto Auckland

You have to walk quite far up the hill to get there, but therefore you’ll be rewarded with an amazing view over the whole city. You can literally see every suburb from there. Mt Eden is Auckland’s highest point of view and it can also be reached with a motorized vehicle.

Stroll through Auckland Domain

This one is another good one from the list of the 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland. Auckland Domain is a big park, lying northeast of Mt Eden. It’s such a pretty park, full of good spots to chill out. It contains some nice Wintergardens, the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Gum Tree Hill and a couple other nice sights. Auckland Domain is quite large and only about 5 minutes away from downtown.

The whole area has been developed around the cone of an extinct volcano, which had its last vulcanic eruption a couple thounsand years ago. Auckland Domain has initially been developed to be a test field for trout, exotic trees and unique bird life. You can also have a look at the statuary, which informs visitors about Auckland Domain’s tradition.

Distance: This walk takes another 40 minutes (15 minutes by bicycle). It’s about 3.1km in total.

Enjoy the Auckland Art Gallery

Last but not least you have to have a look at the Auckland Art Gallery, which is a MUST SEE on the list of the 7 best free backpacker things to do in Auckland. Before you get back to the hostel, you have to check out this unique gallery, which purpose is to be Auckland’s nr.1 place for art and a catalyst for big ideas. One of Auckland’s Art Gallery goals is to expand their visitor’s cultural horizon throught their high qualitative selection of oeuvres from countless artists.

They want to build a community of people, who share their love for art. With over 16.000 unique pieces it’s one of Oceania’s largest art galleries. It has also won an award for the most inspiring visual arts experience in Aotearoa.

It’s a very inspiring collection and a great to end to an exciting day.

Distance: Walk towards the northwest on Wellesley St. for about 10 minutes (5 minutes by bicycle). You can not miss the park. It will be on the right.

I am a german dude, who loves travelling and exciting adventures from bottom of his heart. I want to inspire other people to get out of their comfort zone and travel the world. Plus I really want to show how much you can learn from traveling and what kind of personal development as a human being comes along with it!

  • When finding the right pose for a picture seems a little to complicated 😂
.
When I went to the Philippines with @sndr.ebn , we put an island hopping tour around El Nido on top of the list of things to do ☝
.
And that was a great decision, because it was one the best things I ever did
.
We got recommended to do the El Nido island hopping tour A & C combination, because it is suppose to be the best
.
And it was. The tour absolutely blew my mind❗
.
Plus it taught me something valuable again, which is to always stay open minded, talk to people and follow there tips 👌
.
This is not only important for travelling, but also for life in general
.
Only if you stay open minded, you will talk to other people
.
Only if you talk to other people, you will get great tips
.
And getting tips from others is a great thing
.
Because these tips will help you improve yourself and sometimes lead to situations that create invaluable memories, which last forever ⏳
.
P.s. if you to make an amazing memory for your girl/ boyfriend that lasts forever, bring them to the lost islands near El Nido... 😉

  • How beautiful is this beach in New Zealand??? 😍
.
It's not just the fact that I had the chance to visit this amazing place in the south of New Zealand that makes me very grateful
.
It's also the lesson I got to learn from visiting it, which I am still very thankful for until this day 🙏
.
To travel through New Zealand nonstop without having to work was only possible, because I worked my ass off a couple months prior 👊
.
It led me to saving quite a big amount of money that I could use for travelling this wonderful country
.
So what was the lesson?
.
Pretty simple: hard work always pays off
.
Just keep pushing and you'll reach your goals. Sometimes you reach it quickly, sometimes it takes longer, but just keep moving step by step and you'll hit the target eventually 💪

  • It's impossible not love the castles of Copenhagen, right? 😍🏰
.
It was one of the main reasons why liked this city so much 👌
.
One beautiful castle after another. It almost felt like I am in a fairy tale... 😇😅
.
Already so looking forward to explore Marrakesh in Marocco in two weeks 🙌
.
Anyone having any tips on what to do and see??? .

  • There is something about visiting the most beautiful destinations like Maya Bay that is hard to describe 😄
.
For me it sometimes feels pretty surreal to stay at a place that is considered to be one of the best on the planet
.
I always have to pinch myself when this happens 😅
.
And then I think about all the people who don't have the privilege, the opportunity or the money do the same
.
It's always the same situation and it teaches me something very valuable time and time again
.
And that is BEING GRATEFUL !
.
Being grateful for what you have
.
Being grateful for where you come from
.
Being grateful for the opportunities you have
.
Being grateful for the dreams you can fullfill
.
Being grateful for who you are
.
And being grateful for the chances that you have in life 🙏
.
Because many many people don't have that and in my opinion it's an obligation to get the best out your life you possibly can, even if it's only for the reason alone that others can't ☝
.
So always try to chase your wildest dreams, just like I try to at the end of January in Marocco 😊
.
Anyone having any suggestions on what to do???
.
#mayabay #learnfromtraveling
  • How great is the coastline of Dalmatia in Croatia ??? 😍😊
.
Driving down this wonderful part of a very unique country taught me something quite valuable ☝
.
For me, this landscape was so beautiful that I could not resist to stop at almost every parking bay to take photographs
.
I made picture after picture after picture
.
It took a looong time
.
Finally I got some great once that I can put on my wall, in my books and on my website
.
So what did that teach me now?
.
It taught me that you need to be patient in everything that you do and which is of importance to you ⏳
.
GREAT things need time❗
.
You don't move forward in any area of life, if you switch from one thing to another all the time
.
Choose something, work on it and stick to it
.
Eventually something brilliant will be the outcome
.
Just like this picture is to me... 😊

  • Roy's Peak is definitely one of the greatest spots I have ever been at... 🌏
.
For me, it's also one of the best examples of how many beautiful places are out there, ready to be explored
.
In my relatively short life I have already seen quite a bit of cool destinations 🌐
.
There are some people out there who have seen more (sometimes way more) than I did. But, compared to many other people, I have already seen a fair bit
.
I am NOT saying this to show off!
.
I am saying it, because I want to adress a point ☝
.
To see as much of our beautiful planet as I can, learning about other cultures, getting to know other people, etc. etc. etc... is all one big point on my list of goals in life
.
And I slowly recognize more and more, that the more I strictly keep following these goals and dreams, the more of them I achieve
.
I do, just like most of us, only make small baby steps all the time, but the achievements come eventually ⏳
.
This is why I set some personal goals again this year - travelwise and in personal life - and I hope to inspire others to do the same
.
Off to great 2018... 💪

  • View onto Hamburg's harbour on a lovely day from a "secret" spot 😁
.
There is no other city in my home country that can come up with so many great views
.
Maybe not even any other city in any other country in Europe, even though that would be quite hard to claim
.
Still views like this are one of countless reasons why I love my hometown so much!
.
TELL ME: What is the best thing about your home town??? 😃

  • 2017 is almost over❗
.
It has been a year full of exciting adventures and awesome experiences 🙌
.
But it has also been a year full of ups and downs ⬆⬇
.
Still I learned A LOT, both trough travelling and from my private life
.
I am very thankful for that and especially for all the support I got throughout this year 🙏😘
.
It has been great 💯
.
This picture shows one of the golden moments I'll probably never forget from 2017 - visiting 2.000 year old rice terraces in Batad, Philippines 😍
.
I am already sooo looking forward to all the adventures and adversities ahead in 2018, because .
You can only learn from them
.
They will some day be wonderful memories .
And you ultimately become a better version of yourself
.
For me, the new year has a lot of amazing destinations in store: Marocco, Bavaria, Austria, Italy, Warsaw and hopefully a lot more 😄
.
I wish EVERYONE a healthy start into the New Year and may all your goals and dreams become reality... 💪
.
P.s. don't party to hard tonight 😉
