5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi

By on 19. Oktober 2017

The 5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi are really cool and they fill your day with joy. Hanoi is a big city and there are heaps of things to do and see in general. But because of its size, it might be a better idea to only concentrate on visitng the centre. There is enough waiting for you anyway. Trust me, you don’t really need to see much more than that…

5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi

Before I start telling you about the 5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi, I want to share a quick tip for those, who have never been to this city. Hanoi is huge so you might get lost. And you don’t want that to happen. Especially not those, who travel through Vietnam with a motorbike, it’s easy to get lost in such a big city.

So inform yourself before you get to Hanoi on how to go get to the city centre. Otherwise you’ll have a little problem 😉

5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi – Enjoy a top city view

Ho Hoan Kiem lake

The first one of the 5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi is to go to a small lake named Ho Hoan Kiem, which is right in the middle of the city. It’s very beautiful and in its middle you’ll see a small temple called Ngoc Son Temple. The lake’s water colour is extremly green, which gives it a very unique touch.

Such a pretty water colour

Besides that, you can find many people hanging out there. A lot of them are artists and musicians. It’s a very peaceful place, but still really energetic. So many good vibes. Such a good mix.

Artists everywhere you look

Right next to the lake is a very nice small shopping centre with a bar on the top floor. It’s on the north western end of the lake. From there you can see the whole area and some parts of the city from above. Really nice!

Try street food

The 2nd point on the list of the 5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi is to try as much different street food as you can.

5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi – Try street food

Hanoi’s street food is one of the best in Vietnam. It is at least as good as the street food in Bangkok for example even though heaps of dishes a totally different. You’ll find street food vendors at every corner. Every single dish really is really cheap. A good noodle soup only costs about 1,5$. A big sandwich costs nearly the same. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

A good side effect is that you have the chance to get to know some locals or other backpackers at these street food vendors. Many of them prefer these localities, because they just have a good value for money. So definitely give them a try!

You’ll even find kebab in Hanoi

Vietnamese sandwiches are so delicious

Old Quarter

The Old Quarter of Hanoi is the third thing to cross of the list from the 5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi. The Old Qaurter is full of life!

View towards the Old Quarter

A very vibrant area with lots of street artists, street food shops, other vendors and much more. You’ll have one tricycle or scooter crossing your path after another. It’s ridiculous!

But it’s also good fun. There is no other way but to face the local traffic and behave like a real Vietnamese. Just go with the flow 😉

Many people go there to see the colonial architecture and to give all different kind of shops a try by spending a couple dollars for whatever you can imagine.

Hanoi Opera House

Make sure to visit the next place. The Opera house is a big attraction and an important cultural sight, which is why it has to be on the list of the 5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi. Built by the French colonial administration in 1901, it evolved to one of the classiest institutions of the city.

The Hanoi Opera House has actually been modeled from two opera houses in Paris. When you visit it, you will be blown away by the orchestras and famous Asian singers. It’s a great place for people, who are more into culture travel.

Hanoi’s traffic is ridiculous

French Quarter

The last thing you need to tick off the list from the 5 best things to do in the centre of Hanoi is visiting the French Quarter. This remarkable area has been home of most foreign embassies and govermental buildings.

It’s also the neighbourhood of the rich. Walking around will make you feel like you are in a surreal movie. Big houses with impressive ornaments, high priced restaurants and luxurious hotels everywhere you look. The Bel Air of Hanoi. A complete opposite to the rest of the city.

You’ll also find a lot of boutiques, galleries and shopping stores in the area. Many monied Vietnamese come here to spend some cash. Overall it’s a nice part of the city and it ads to the diversity.

I loved my visit to Hanoi and you have picked some good recommendations. I loved wandering around the lake then visiting the ‘Hanoi Hilton’ prison museum.

      Hi Stuart,

So good to hear mate! Yeah you are right. Hanoi is extremly cool, especially the areas around the lake. That`s why I mentioned it.

Have you been to other places in Vietnam as well?

  • Golden sunset at Twin Beach in El Nido 🌅🌄
.
I don't know what it exactly is, but there is something magical about a great sunset
.
Maybe it's the fact that is symbolises the end of a day. But there never really is an end to it, because a couple hours later, once we wake up, we have the chance again to do something great with our lifes 💪
.
Each and every single day we can decide how we want to spend the day, what goals we work towards to and ultimately what kind of value we bring to other people 👍
.
It's always only up to ourselfs, if we are happy at the end of the day during sunset
.
Never forget, we all have a choice. Always❗

  • Strolling through paradise... 😍👌🌴
.
Some places on our planet are just crazy beautiful .
It's almost impossible to describe the beauty and the feeling that you get when you walk around at beaches like this one 🌞
.
I could not say which beach of all the ones I have seen so far would be the best one, but all the beaches in El Nido are definitely top ranked 🌏
.
TELL ME: Where did you really feel lost (in a good way 😉) the last time???

  • Hello mate, how are you? 😀🐻🐾
.
Isn't that the cutest animal on earth?
.
What I can definitely say for myself is that they are easily the fluffiest I have ever touched 😍
.
And they are by far the most relaxed animals ever. Maybe because of all the eucalyptus they eat... 😉
.
TELL ME: What's YOUR favourite animal?

  • The door to Angkor Wat during sunrise 😍🌅
.
I love a good sunrise! Not only because of its enormous beauty, but mainly for the fact that it's the perfect symbol for a new chance 👌
.
A new chance to improve
.
A new chance to do something good
.
A new chance to bring value to the world
.
A new chance to walk towards the right direction
.
And ultimately and new chance to get the best out your life and make great memories!
.
Great Memories that you can tell grandchildren about in 50 years from now, which will teach them some valuable lessons for life 🙏

  • A perfect example of a unique city that can teach a great lesson❗
.
Spending some time in one of the coolest and most beautiful cities on the planet made me think about what an insane level of power, creativity and endurance humanity has
.
It's crazy what we are able to do and to build nowerdays. But it has always been like this ⏳
.
Prague is a really good example for that. A city full of thousands and thousands of details, wonderful buildings and historically important monuments, all built over a course of hundreds of years
.
And the required power, creativity and endurance the people needed is something that we all have within ourselfs 🔥
.
It's not only reservated for specific people or special human beings
.
Everyone has that in him/ herself ! 💪
.
It's just about recognizing these strenghts and letting them all out... 👊 and don't let anyone tell you any different!
.
I always say this (on my website as well) - travel is the best teacher. You just need to find the true values of it and adapt them to your everyday life 👌
.

  • What's the true value of home? 😍🍁
.
Pretty autumn views like this one from a nearby forest of my hometown Hamburg?
.
Maybe...
.
But not really. In my opinion it's something else
.
As much as I like travelling around, discovering new places, getting to know other cultures, meeting new people and seeing other types of wonderful landscapes, I just still never forget where I come from ⚓
.
Exploring the world as much as possible is great, but there is also a great value in appreciating your own Backround
.
The more I look around, the more I see young people like me, who want to escape from their home countries, just to wander around for as long as possible with no real intent
.
I think that's a big mistake! ☝
.
When the travel bug gets me again, I never JUST travel around to say:" hey look, I left things behind and went on the next big journey. Isn't that awesome???"
.
It is in a way, but not to much to be honest
.
When I go somewhere I always try to learn something new from the journey itself, the people or the culture AND THEN take it back home with me and use for my future
.
This why HOME is so important... Because it's the base where it all starts and Without home there would be nothing to ultimately come back and adapt your new skills to
.
So always make sure to appreciate home and where you come from 👌💪

  • I can already say, that exploring Nacpan Beach was one of the most beautiful things I have done this year even though there are still 2 months left... 😉😍
.
It's always fascinating to me how fast beautiful places like this usually become mass tourism spots
.
Luckily Nacpan Beach is still quite undeveloped and therefore one of the prettiest and most pristine beaches in northern Palawan in my opinion
.
Hopefully it stays like this for a long, long time ⏳🙏
.
If you have never been, I highly recommend to make this one of your next travel goals 😄

  • I don't know about you but I absolutely LOVE adventures❗
.
You know why?
.
Because they push you, they are fun AND you LEARN something valuable from them every single time 👊
.
One of the greatest adventures I have done in my life so far was a road trip through the center of Vietnam with my motorcycle that I called "Foxy Roxy" (I know that's weird 😅)
.
When I did it, I did not know what to expect, but my goal was to have an awesome time
.
I found out pretty quickly that it's gonna be a hard challenge: many locals didn't really speak English, roads have been in bad constitution, I got lost a couple times, my motorbike broke down 2 times, I freezed my ass off in the mountains and much, much more
.
So why was this adventure great then?
.
Because I LEARNED that you have got to keep pushing even if you struggle hard. You always have to keep going. Never give up. Keep moving and don't ever stop 💪
.
That's what I did, which is why I ended up having an amazing time: I saw awesome landscapes, met the friendliest people, found lost temples and ultimately learned an important lesson for life
.
ALWAYS keep pushing towards you goals EVERY single day and never give up
.
I AM CURIOUS: What is your biggest travel lesson??? 😊

  • There is a quote that says "if traveling was free, you'd never see me again" and this quote fits my attitude a 100%❗
.
My ultimate goal is to become free one day, financially and personally, so that I can travel to awesome places like banaue in the Philippines whenever I want 😍
.
Just being free of boundaries and the 9 to 5 lifestyle
.
If I had the chance, I'd probably travel the whole planet 🌎
.
Who's with me on this??? 😀
