Top 5 highlights in Cambodia – What to Do & See

By on 26. August 2017

The top 5 highlights in Cambodia are something truely special. This country has so much to see and to do. You will probably fall in love with it straight away. At least that’s what happened to me. From massive temple areas in the jungle and the prettiest beaches to an unbelievably moving history. This country just has it all.

For me, the top 5 highlights in Cambodia have been quite hard to choose, because there is just so much I could pick from. Cambodia is one of the poorest countries on earth and still pretty undeveloped. Tourism just starts to evolve and the living standard is slowly about to rise. But for now it is still very raw and many local people can only live with what they have, which is almost nothing. There are no fancy cars, pretty homes or digital development at all in many areas.

A lot of people still live in tin shacks and try to think from day to day. It is pretty dirty in the cities, but also really, really beautiful, if you get out of them. I have rarely seen a country as beautiful and untouched as this, which made it even harder to choose my top 5 highlights in Cambodia.

However, the fact that it’s still quite a primitive country makes it even more authentic. And that’s exactly what makes each and every single corner of it so fascinating!

Top 5 highlights in Cambodia – What to Do & See

From all the wonderful places I have seen in this country, I will start with the most famous one of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia.

Booking.com

Angkor Wat/ Angkor City

Angkor Wat is THE nr. 1 out of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia for many people. I personally can not agree 100%, because I loved everything that I have seen in this country, except Phnom Penh. Still, I definitely have to agree that Angkor Wat respectively the Angkor City is an amazing place. No doubt about that!

Top 5 highlights in Cambodia – Angkor City

It is one of the world’s most remarkable temple areas. The temples have been built more than 1.000 years ago and they have such a big value for this country. Not just historically and religiously, but also for the tourism industry. It attracts a lot of people from all over the world and I completely understand the reason why.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat

When you walk around the temple area, you will feel like you have been set back in time. All the different temples have a different meaning and they have been built by various kings over a period of a couple hundred years. You can almost feel the passion, that the Khmer folk had put into these temples when you look at all the incredible details of the ornaments. Just a phenominal place, which has to be the first one on the list of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia.

The Angkor City must be under the top 5 highlights in Cambodia

Otres Beach

The 2nd one out of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia is Otres Beach. This really beautiful beach lies in the southwest of the country, close to Sihanoukville. Otres Beach is devided into two seperate parts – Otres Beach 1 and Otres Beach 2. I have spent a couple days Otres Beach 2 and it was nothing but wonderful.

What an special sunset

It is very quiet and relaxing. The beach is in perfect condition. Fine white sand, a lovely water temperature, cheap and comfortable hostels and one of the best sunsets I have ever seen. Right in front of Otres Beach is a small island, which you can have a look at by going on your own kajak tour. The water next to this small island is crystal clear. Absolutely perfect!

At night I recommend you to have a swim in the ocean and watch the glowing plankton while enjoying the realxing silence. Close to Otres Beach you can also go on nice parties. There is something for everyone. A Must see and easily one of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia.

Koh Rong Island

Koh Rong also needs to be under the list of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia. It is one of the fastest growing islands in terms of tourism in the whole country. On the one hand this fact is not a ripper, but on the other hand it is completely understandable, because this island is truely beautiful. It’s a paradise for travelers and people, who want to get away from the busy life.

There are a lot of things to do on the island besides hanging out at perfect beaches. You can go on a fishing tour, check out the jungle (be aware of snakes), do a snorkeling tour or go scuba diving. All of that is great fun and I promise, that you’ll have a blast. And luckily, in comparison to other tourists spot in Southeast Asia like Koh Phi Phi or Bali, the tourism level at Koh Rong is still a joke.

Short tip: Check out the sunset at Long Beach 😉

Koh Rong is such a beautiful island

Top 5 highlights in Cambodia – Koh Rong is one of them

Koh Ta Kiev

Koh Ta Kiev is even more secluded and untouched than Koh Rong and therefore it needs to be under the list of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia. When I first heard of Koh Ta Kiev, I didn’t know anything about it. In fact, most people don’t. This island is exactly the kind of place to go to, if you want to feel like you have been completely shut off from the rest of the world.

Signposts at Koh Ta Kiev are very basic

You can sleep it tree houses, you won’t have any internet and the lifestyle is very basic. It is so cool! Usually it’s very rare in our modern world to find an as untouched place as this one, but they obviously still exist. So, make sure to stop by and put it under your list of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia.

Kajaking during sunset near Koh Ta Kiev is just awesome

Killing Fields

This is also a Must See in my opinion and it is definitely one of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia. Many people don’t know that Cambodia has such a moving history. Not only because of the Angkor City, but also because of the 20th century. In the 1970s Cambodia has been in a huge war and the whole country has been under a dictarorial governence. Many Cambodian people have been punished to death in many very bad labor camps.

One of the biggest ones have been the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh. There have been way more of these places in the whole country. Between 1975 and 1979 more than 2 million people have been killed by the Red Khmer. You can read more about it in this post.

Cracked skulls of many victims

Visiting the Killing Fields is definitely an eye opener and an experience you will never forget. There is no way that the Killing Fields can be left out of the top 5 highlights in Cambodia.

  • Strolling through paradise... 😍👌🌴
.
Some places on our planet are just crazy beautiful .
It's almost impossible to describe the beauty and the feeling that you get when you walk around at beaches like this one 🌞
.
I could not say which beach of all the ones I have seen so far would be the best one, but all the beaches in El Nido are definitely top ranked 🌏
.
TELL ME: Where did you really feel lost (in a good way 😉) the last time???
.

  • Hello mate, how are you? 😀🐻🐾
.
Isn't that the cutest animal on earth?
.
What I can definitely say for myself is that they are easily the fluffiest I have ever touched 😍
.
And they are by far the most relaxed animals ever. Maybe because of all the eucalyptus they eat... 😉
.
TELL ME: What's YOUR favourite animal?

  • The door to Angkor Wat during sunrise 😍🌅
.
I love a good sunrise! Not only because of its enormous beauty, but mainly for the fact that it's the perfect symbol for a new chance 👌
.
A new chance to improve
.
A new chance to do something good
.
A new chance to bring value to the world
.
A new chance to walk towards the right direction
.
And ultimately and new chance to get the best out your life and make great memories!
.
Great Memories that you can tell grandchildren about in 50 years from now, which will teach them some valuable lessons for life 🙏

  • A perfect example of a unique city that can teach a great lesson❗
.
Spending some time in one of the coolest and most beautiful cities on the planet made me think about what an insane level of power, creativity and endurance humanity has
.
It's crazy what we are able to do and to build nowerdays. But it has always been like this ⏳
.
Prague is a really good example for that. A city full of thousands and thousands of details, wonderful buildings and historically important monuments, all built over a course of hundreds of years
.
And the required power, creativity and endurance the people needed is something that we all have within ourselfs 🔥
.
It's not only reservated for specific people or special human beings
.
Everyone has that in him/ herself ! 💪
.
It's just about recognizing these strenghts and letting them all out... 👊 and don't let anyone tell you any different!
.
I always say this (on my website as well) - travel is the best teacher. You just need to find the true values of it and adapt them to your everyday life 👌
.

  • What's the true value of home? 😍🍁
.
Pretty autumn views like this one from a nearby forest of my hometown Hamburg?
.
Maybe...
.
But not really. In my opinion it's something else
.
As much as I like travelling around, discovering new places, getting to know other cultures, meeting new people and seeing other types of wonderful landscapes, I just still never forget where I come from ⚓
.
Exploring the world as much as possible is great, but there is also a great value in appreciating your own Backround
.
The more I look around, the more I see young people like me, who want to escape from their home countries, just to wander around for as long as possible with no real intent
.
I think that's a big mistake! ☝
.
When the travel bug gets me again, I never JUST travel around to say:" hey look, I left things behind and went on the next big journey. Isn't that awesome???"
.
It is in a way, but not to much to be honest
.
When I go somewhere I always try to learn something new from the journey itself, the people or the culture AND THEN take it back home with me and use for my future
.
This why HOME is so important... Because it's the base where it all starts and Without home there would be nothing to ultimately come back and adapt your new skills to
.
So always make sure to appreciate home and where you come from 👌💪
.

  • I can already say, that exploring Nacpan Beach was one of the most beautiful things I have done this year even though there are still 2 months left... 😉😍
.
It's always fascinating to me how fast beautiful places like this usually become mass tourism spots
.
Luckily Nacpan Beach is still quite undeveloped and therefore one of the prettiest and most pristine beaches in northern Palawan in my opinion
.
Hopefully it stays like this for a long, long time ⏳🙏
.
If you have never been, I highly recommend to make this one of your next travel goals 😄

  • I don't know about you but I absolutely LOVE adventures❗
.
You know why?
.
Because they push you, they are fun AND you LEARN something valuable from them every single time 👊
.
One of the greatest adventures I have done in my life so far was a road trip through the center of Vietnam with my motorcycle that I called "Foxy Roxy" (I know that's weird 😅)
.
When I did it, I did not know what to expect, but my goal was to have an awesome time
.
I found out pretty quickly that it's gonna be a hard challenge: many locals didn't really speak English, roads have been in bad constitution, I got lost a couple times, my motorbike broke down 2 times, I freezed my ass off in the mountains and much, much more
.
So why was this adventure great then?
.
Because I LEARNED that you have got to keep pushing even if you struggle hard. You always have to keep going. Never give up. Keep moving and don't ever stop 💪
.
That's what I did, which is why I ended up having an amazing time: I saw awesome landscapes, met the friendliest people, found lost temples and ultimately learned an important lesson for life
.
ALWAYS keep pushing towards you goals EVERY single day and never give up
.
I AM CURIOUS: What is your biggest travel lesson??? 😊
.

  • There is a quote that says "if traveling was free, you'd never see me again" and this quote fits my attitude a 100%❗
.
My ultimate goal is to become free one day, financially and personally, so that I can travel to awesome places like banaue in the Philippines whenever I want 😍
.
Just being free of boundaries and the 9 to 5 lifestyle
.
If I had the chance, I'd probably travel the whole planet 🌎
.
Who's with me on this??? 😀
.
#banaue #riceterraces
  • One of the best sunsets I have ever seen was on Koh Lanta in Thailand 🌅
.
I just love a good sunset and I know I am not the only one... 😉
.
So TELL ME: where was your favourite sunset at? 🌎
.
P.s. I am going to London in 3 weeks. Anyone who has some tips on what to do?
