6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zealand

By on 17. Juli 2017

To choose 6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zealand is quite a hard thing to do. New Zealand is full of adventures and crazy stuff to do. I could not believe, how much was waiting for me, while I was there. I really have to admit, that I did not do enough research before I went to New Zealand. The number of things to do is insane for such a small country in comparison and the following 6 just have to be on your list.

6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zealand

You won’t find many places on earth as beautiful as New Zealand. No doubt about that, guys! New Zealand is one of the most predestinated countries in terms of adrenalin and mind blowing landscapes. The „Hobbit“ country is a destination everyone should put on their list of things to see in life. Still, you will find some activities and places, which definitely stand out from others…

White Water Rafting

First to mark red on your list of 6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zealand is the White Water Rafting in River Valley. New Zealand has a lot of cool places to raft at, but this one might be the best and most fun one on the whole north island. I would instantly agree on that, if someone would ask me. If you just consider the way to the actual river, than you will be blown away already. It is absolutely incredible and a highlight for itself. Green and healthy valleys with thousends of sheep all around, no people anywhere and beautiful nature as far as the eye can reach. Just wonderful!

Having fun at the White Water Rafting

The rafting in River Valley itself is sooo cool and a lot of fun. Promised! You will float down a long, crystal clear river for about 2 hours, jump off big cliffs (about 5-6 m) and try to master some pretty difficult tasks while you are on your way down. An experience you probably won’t forget!

Black Water Rafting

Put the one and only Black Water Rafting in Waitomo on your list of 6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zealand as well. I promise you, you will have an amazing time exploring the mysterious Ruakuri Cave. You have to jump down small underground waterfalls, you’ll be brought to types of limestone rocks you have probably never seen before and enjoy the flicker of the magical glowworms. This is one of the best adventures to witness in whole New Zealand in my opinion. Really cool!

Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Don’t forget to put the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Taupo on your list of 6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zealand. It is quite a difficult task to master to be honest. Especially when the weather is bad, then you will not have that much fun. But if the sun is shining, then you will have a blast for sure. 19 km in total, 6-8 hours of straight hiking along the vulcanic scenery from „Lord of the Rings“ is one of the most epic things you can possibly do in whole New Zealand. Along your way you will see the famous Red Crater, Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom from „LOTR“) and the Emerald lake as well as Blue lake. Nothing but incredible!

Franz Josef Glacier

Franz Josef Glacier is a “Must Do” and should definitely be on your list of 6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zeland. It is even cooler, if you choose to do a helicopter ride over the scenic blue ice and the nearby township. Stunning views onto the Franz Josef Glacier combined with the feeling of pure freedom. What else could you want?

Franz Josef Glacier is definitely one of the biggest backpacker highlights in New Zealand

Additionally this unique glacier is a perfect example for “what global warming does to mother earth”. I promise you, when you stand in front of this stunning piece of nature and you see the sign, which explains, how the glacier looked like in 2012 and 2009, then you won’t believe what you’ll read…

Queenstown

One of my favourite places in New Zealand is Queenstown. This small but crazy place has to be under your list of 6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zealand, because it will probably be one of the coolest places you’ll ever go to. Not just, because you can have incredible parties, hang out with travellers from all over the globe and have a great time, it is also, because of the incomparable surrounding enviroment, which will easily blow your mind.

A short tip of mine is to do as many hiking tracks as you can. The rewards are priceless. So many impressive views! Besides that, Queenstown is the nr. 1 place to be when it comes to adrenalin activities: Ledge Swing, canyoning, Bunjy jumping, sky diving, zip lining and much more!

Fjordland/ Milford Sound

The last thing to put on your list of 6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zealand is Milford Sound. This might be the most scenic place I have seen in the whole country. A landscape that melts every nature freak’s heart. The only place I could compare to this are the fjords in Norway. But other than that, it is just not comparable in any way. The whole scenery of Fjordland just looks like a movie. Doing a proper boat tour through this painted waters is the only way to get around.

Such a great day

What waits for you: Waterfalls (over 100 m high), dolphins and seals everywhere, plus beautifully shaped mountain ranges, that will make you fall in love with Fjordland forever!

Journey to Milford Sound

Of course there are countless of other incredible things to see in New Zealand. That’s why it is so hard to choose 6 epic backpacker highlights in New Zealand. I could have easily taken 6 other ones, but, if you start with these 6, you will have a good kick off 😉

  • Strolling through paradise... 😍👌🌴
.
Some places on our planet are just crazy beautiful .
It's almost impossible to describe the beauty and the feeling that you get when you walk around at beaches like this one 🌞
.
I could not say which beach of all the ones I have seen so far would be the best one, but all the beaches in El Nido are definitely top ranked 🌏
.
TELL ME: Where did you really feel lost (in a good way 😉) the last time???
.

  • Hello mate, how are you? 😀🐻🐾
.
Isn't that the cutest animal on earth?
.
What I can definitely say for myself is that they are easily the fluffiest I have ever touched 😍
.
And they are by far the most relaxed animals ever. Maybe because of all the eucalyptus they eat... 😉
.
TELL ME: What's YOUR favourite animal?

  • The door to Angkor Wat during sunrise 😍🌅
.
I love a good sunrise! Not only because of its enormous beauty, but mainly for the fact that it's the perfect symbol for a new chance 👌
.
A new chance to improve
.
A new chance to do something good
.
A new chance to bring value to the world
.
A new chance to walk towards the right direction
.
And ultimately and new chance to get the best out your life and make great memories!
.
Great Memories that you can tell grandchildren about in 50 years from now, which will teach them some valuable lessons for life 🙏

  • A perfect example of a unique city that can teach a great lesson❗
.
Spending some time in one of the coolest and most beautiful cities on the planet made me think about what an insane level of power, creativity and endurance humanity has
.
It's crazy what we are able to do and to build nowerdays. But it has always been like this ⏳
.
Prague is a really good example for that. A city full of thousands and thousands of details, wonderful buildings and historically important monuments, all built over a course of hundreds of years
.
And the required power, creativity and endurance the people needed is something that we all have within ourselfs 🔥
.
It's not only reservated for specific people or special human beings
.
Everyone has that in him/ herself ! 💪
.
It's just about recognizing these strenghts and letting them all out... 👊 and don't let anyone tell you any different!
.
I always say this (on my website as well) - travel is the best teacher. You just need to find the true values of it and adapt them to your everyday life 👌
.

  • What's the true value of home? 😍🍁
.
Pretty autumn views like this one from a nearby forest of my hometown Hamburg?
.
Maybe...
.
But not really. In my opinion it's something else
.
As much as I like travelling around, discovering new places, getting to know other cultures, meeting new people and seeing other types of wonderful landscapes, I just still never forget where I come from ⚓
.
Exploring the world as much as possible is great, but there is also a great value in appreciating your own Backround
.
The more I look around, the more I see young people like me, who want to escape from their home countries, just to wander around for as long as possible with no real intent
.
I think that's a big mistake! ☝
.
When the travel bug gets me again, I never JUST travel around to say:" hey look, I left things behind and went on the next big journey. Isn't that awesome???"
.
It is in a way, but not to much to be honest
.
When I go somewhere I always try to learn something new from the journey itself, the people or the culture AND THEN take it back home with me and use for my future
.
This why HOME is so important... Because it's the base where it all starts and Without home there would be nothing to ultimately come back and adapt your new skills to
.
So always make sure to appreciate home and where you come from 👌💪

  • I can already say, that exploring Nacpan Beach was one of the most beautiful things I have done this year even though there are still 2 months left... 😉😍
.
It's always fascinating to me how fast beautiful places like this usually become mass tourism spots
.
Luckily Nacpan Beach is still quite undeveloped and therefore one of the prettiest and most pristine beaches in northern Palawan in my opinion
.
Hopefully it stays like this for a long, long time ⏳🙏
.
If you have never been, I highly recommend to make this one of your next travel goals 😄

  • I don't know about you but I absolutely LOVE adventures❗
.
You know why?
.
Because they push you, they are fun AND you LEARN something valuable from them every single time 👊
.
One of the greatest adventures I have done in my life so far was a road trip through the center of Vietnam with my motorcycle that I called "Foxy Roxy" (I know that's weird 😅)
.
When I did it, I did not know what to expect, but my goal was to have an awesome time
.
I found out pretty quickly that it's gonna be a hard challenge: many locals didn't really speak English, roads have been in bad constitution, I got lost a couple times, my motorbike broke down 2 times, I freezed my ass off in the mountains and much, much more
.
So why was this adventure great then?
.
Because I LEARNED that you have got to keep pushing even if you struggle hard. You always have to keep going. Never give up. Keep moving and don't ever stop 💪
.
That's what I did, which is why I ended up having an amazing time: I saw awesome landscapes, met the friendliest people, found lost temples and ultimately learned an important lesson for life
.
ALWAYS keep pushing towards you goals EVERY single day and never give up
.
I AM CURIOUS: What is your biggest travel lesson??? 😊

  • There is a quote that says "if traveling was free, you'd never see me again" and this quote fits my attitude a 100%❗
.
My ultimate goal is to become free one day, financially and personally, so that I can travel to awesome places like banaue in the Philippines whenever I want 😍
.
Just being free of boundaries and the 9 to 5 lifestyle
.
If I had the chance, I'd probably travel the whole planet 🌎
.
Who's with me on this??? 😀
.
#banaue #riceterraces
  • One of the best sunsets I have ever seen was on Koh Lanta in Thailand 🌅
.
I just love a good sunset and I know I am not the only one... 😉
.
So TELL ME: where was your favourite sunset at? 🌎
.
P.s. I am going to London in 3 weeks. Anyone who has some tips on what to do?
.
