Rinjani 3 day trekking tour adventure
The Rinjani 3 day trekking tour adventure is under the top 5 things I have done in my life so far. In terms of adventure and learnings from travelling. It is a trekking, which is not from this world. Such an epic scenery and a tough task to do. The nature will leave you speachless. That’s for sure. But this journey is not as easy as you might think 😉
Rinjani 3 day trekking tour adventure
First of all, I want to tell you guys, that I hated trekking, camping or anything related to that in the past. Before I went on the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour adventure, I just did not really like all those kind of stuff. It got a little better already during my time in Australia, but it still was not my favourite thing to do.
After I have done the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour, I changed my mind. Since then, I just love being outside in nature experiencing as much of it as I can. Nowerdays I love challenging myself with crazy hikes like the one in Banaue. Over the years it just became a part of myself to always push me with crazy adventures/ projects. But you can read more of that below 😉
For now I just wanna say, that the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour was absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend it before I even start telling you about it.
Rinjani 3 day trekking tour – general information, costs and how to get there
The “Rinjani” is a big vulcano on an island called Lombok. Lombok belongs to Indonesia and it is located in the south of the country. This vulcano is inactive and mainly used for trekking. Lots of people go there every year to climb this 3.726 m high monster. The vulcano has a big and very pretty lake in its middle. The fact that it’s a vulcano makes the climbing quite tough for people, who have breathing problems. It can be pretty dusty. And the higher you get, the thinner the air becomes.
Indonesia is a country full of beautiful islands. So it is quite hard to get around. Especially, because the transportation systems are not that developed. To get to Lombok, you need to take the ferry. Most people come from Bali. I did too. You can either take the slow or fast boat. I took the slow one to save money. But both of them don’t cost that much (around 10 $). You will start the boat ride from the northeast of Bali. A bus will bring you there, once you have booked the ticket. Make sure to bring food and water 😉
The whole journey (bus, boat and bus) takes about half a day. Maybe a bit more.
The prices & weather
Once you arrive in Lombok, the salesmen start to come at you to sell the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour. Be aware, that there are different prices. On an average it costs about 120 $ p.p., if you take a tour for 2 people. So get yourself someone you can share the costs of the tour with. But I have met two girls, who got it for half the price. But they were doing the “we are poor backpacker girls” show. So it might have been easier to get a good price as if I have tried it this way 😉
The weather in Lombok is usually quite pleasent. Over a small period during the year there is a rainy season, because it belongs to the subtropical area. But most of the time you have sun. I recommend you to do the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour when it’s good weather. Otherwise it will not be enjoyable, I guess.
Because the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour is quite hard. You should check out the weather forecast.
Rinjani 3 day trekking tour – Procedure and highlights
So, first I need to tell straight away, that the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour is not this “fluffy rainbow, it’s all gonna be easy” kind of thing. As I said, it is quite tough. Especially for people, who are not that sporty or, who haven’t done any trekking before. I was full of naivety as well. My thoughts were: “Oh I am gonna make the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour eeeeasy.” Not a bit of it! I struggled too, even though I am quite fit I would claim. The thing with it is this. As said, it can get quite dusty, because it’s a vulcano. Additionally it will be pretty cold up there. Especially at night and when you walk up all the way to the summit. Additionally it’s very steep a lot of times. It all sums up.
So you might think: “But what about my backpack or luggage? Should I carry it all the way up?”
No, of course not. Before the actual Rinjani 3 day trekking tour starts, you will be brought to your hostel where you can leave and safely store your stuff. You just take with you, what you think you will need. Make sure to bring enough clothes. As said, at night it will be cold 😉
What you should bring
Besides that it’s pretty obvious, that there are no showers on the vulcano and you will start to sweat. It’s good to have some additional changing clothes then. Trust me!
Also bring a good photo camera and video camera with you. You will be blown away by the views!
Everything else will be carried for you by small Indonesian dudes with calves double the size of yours 🙂 Food, water, tents, sleeping bags, and so on. My highest respect to these dudes. Really! They carry around 20-30 kg each. They have these old big bamboo stocks on their back with the gear attached to it on both ends. And they walk all they with you (except to the summit). Up and down and up and down and up… crazy!
You can start the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour from two sides. We started from the west 🙂
You will get picked up in the morning by bus. The tour guide drives you up to 1.000 m already. That’s where the track starts. Before they will bring you to a museum to show you a small copy of the Rinjani. You can see the exact route there. Quite interesting. In total you will walk about 20 km (including 3.027 m up and 3027 m down, if you add up everything). At least that’s what the guide said.
The first day of the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour takes you from 1.000 m up to 2.400 m. Pretty hard. One the way to the vulcano you will see how high it is. Quite impressive. You will have lunch in between. Make sure to drink lots of water 😉 At first you walk along quite flat landscapes, but then all of the sudden it starts to get very steep. You might see wild monkeys on the way. On the third day a Brazilian dude even got attacked by them, because he had food in his hand xD
It will take you about 6-8 hours to get up to 2.400 m. That’s also where you will sleep. You can see the lake from there already. And the sunset… honestly, nothing but breathtaking!
One of the most incredible sunsets I have ever seen. Maybe even the best one. I will never forget that one. The only thing, which anoyed me a bit was the rubbish everywhere… After dinner and the sunset, you will have a short rest.
Why short rest? Because the second day roughly starts at 2:30 am. You will be woken up and probably feel like ****, because the first climb is quite exhausting already.
Why do you wake up that early? Because the plan is to make it to the summit before the sunrise. So you not even have breakfast. You just start straight away. From 2.400 m to 3.700 m there are some very steep parts. Additionally these parts are very rocky and slippery. Sometimes you walk up 3 m and fall back 1,5 m. Really annoying and exhausting.
Short tip: There is no protection. So watch out where you walk. If you don’t watch out, you might fall down the mountain. It can be pretty dangerous. A couple people died during the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour in the past already. But that should not scare you. Just be consciously aware of it.
As you walk up
On your way to the summit you will also have the feeling 3-4 times, that you can already see it. But you don’t 😉 Just keep walking. The higher you are, the thinner the air is, which makes it even harder. I had to stop a couple times and I also needed some sweets to boost my energy level. Otherwise I maybe would not have made it. But it’s all worth it, because when you reach the summit (unfortunately I did not make it before the sunrise) the feeling and the view you have, will overwhelm you.
At least that’s how it was for me. I almost had some tears in my eyes, because ich felt so happy. You will feel like you are on top of the world. You can look so far and see the whole island of Lombok and even further. Just this feeling is worth doing the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour a thousand times.
Up there it is really cold and windy. So use warm clothes. You can even take a photo with a sign. So cool! 🙂
After spending about 15 minutes up there you will go down to the camp again. On the way down, you can take incredible pictures and you actually really see where the vulcano could erupt. Once you are at the camp you get breakfast. Finally! 😉
Everyone of our group (English, French, Australians and Brazilians) was like: “Fuck this, let’s stop and go home” 🙂 But straight after the breakfast you have to go on. We even had a 10 year old Australian kid with us. I am still amazed how he made all of that. Very admirable!
The next stop of the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour is the lake in the middle. You walk along the valleys, which is a really peaceful and relaxing diversion. The view is absolutely fantastic. It takes about 2-3 hours until you reach the lake. You can go for a swim there. Or you just walk to the nearby hot springs, which is so needed after the exhausting hikes.
And up again
After a proper lunch, we all just wanted to stay there and hang out, but the guide will make you walk up to the next camp. Another 450 metres in altitude.
On the way up there are some parts where you even have to climb up walls. Some people of the group had to hold on to stones and get pushed up from below. In that moment I was even more impressed of the carriers, because they walked up these walls like it was nothing. It looked so easy. You will be amazed too. By the evening you will be at the camp.
The third day of the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour is basically just going all the way down to the pick up station. Every meter you go down will be weird, because your legs will be saw. Of course you will also take some pictures with your group. After finally reaching the end, you have the choice to do whatever. You will be brought back to the hostel where you started. Me, the French and the Brazilians went to the Gili Islands after that. An amazing experience as well.
Rinjani 3 day trekking tour – What I have learned
The Rinjani 3 day trekking tour was a big adventure, which taught me a lot again. Honestly guys, you would not believe how much such an experience can teach you for life or clears your mind regarding certain questions.
Of course the lessons I have learned from it came over time. It’s always like that. You mostly don’t see the value straight away. It needs time, just like with anything else in life. Building a house takes time. Learning new skills take time. Developing as a person takes time. I guess you get the point.
But in general the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour taught me these things:
- Life is a marathon, not a sprint – ALWAYS
- Just keep walking/ going, does not matter how slow you are. You will still be faster than the ones, who quit
To explain the first point. Everything valueble takes time.
You have a big goal? It will take time.
You wanna build a company? It will take time
You wanna loose 20 kg? It will take time
And this is always the fact. Nothing worthwhile comes over night. I know I said this in another blog post already, but it is a fact.
For travellers it might be something like this: You wanna save a lot of money to travel? It will probably take time…
You just can’t so anything about it and you just have to except it. In my opinion the problem nowerdays is this:
We live in a world that is way to fast. A world where cars get faster, 100 m olympia sprinters get fast every year, information can be seen on the other side of the world within a second with just one click, etc. And that process will become more intense.
People grow up like this and most of us don’t really see the value of patience. Everyone wants to have this, this and that. NOW! And if they don’t get it, they quit.
Or people just don’t try long enough. A perfect example is a gym at the start of every year. People are excited as fuck. The think they lose weight very fast and will look like “The Rock” in six weeks. Once they see, that it requires hard work over a long period of time, most of them quit quickly… And that’s what I mean. Life is always a marathon, not a sprint.
The second learning matches the first one perfectly. You just gotta keep walking/ going. Especially when it gets hard. If you still keep walking until you reach your goal, the reward will always be there. And it will be priceless. When I thought I am not gonna make it to the summit during the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour, I just told myself: “Keep walking Christian, keep walking… You will make it eventually”
It does not matter how long it takes. What matters is, that you make it and, that you don’t quit. On the way up I have seen so many people going down again, because it was to hard for them. What do you wanna say to that? That’s just a bad attitude in my opinion. You not gonna make the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour with a bad attitude. And you will not gonna reach any goal in life with an attitude like that…
That’s the truth. And everyone knows it. I learned for myself after the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour, that I never want to quit anything again that I started, unless there is no proper value/reward at the end of the road. And I won’t.
And every other traveller, who reads this should be clear about that. Sometimes, while travelling, things get hard and you maybe just wanna quit and go back home into normal life. Back to your comfort zone. But honestly, don’t do that unless you really want that easy life.
And why should you not do that? Because you will not develope as a person and become a better version of yourself. And that’s ultimately what we all want. Being the best person we can and being happy, because of it.
So as you might see already, I really recommend to do the Rinjani 3 day trekking tour. It is one of the best things I have done so far. And I will do as many similar things as I possibly can to grow even more and become a better “me”.
