The top 5 things to do in the Philippines

By on 14. April 2017

The top 5 things to do in the Philippines are hard to choose. Especially because of the fact, that this country has more than 7.000 islands to go to. In the last 3 weeks I have seen a lot of cool destinations, but there is so much more to explore. I guess, I have not even seen 5 % of what this country has to offer. But anyway, the spots I went to can be considered to be the most known. From untouched islands, to impressive vulcanos, raw jungles, 2.000 year old rice terraces, pulsing cities and the friendliest people I have ever met. There is something for everyone…

The top 5 things to do in the Philippines

First of all I want to tell you guys, that the Philippines blew my mind and tought me a lot of important stuff again. I will write about that in the upcoming articles. It is such a lovely country with the best people I have maybe ever met. Obviously it is a typical asian country – very busy, completely packed, pretty uncontrolled, not very much developed… but still insanely beautiful and everything seems to work somehow.

A country where 1 year old babies drive on a tricycle already

From all the beautiful destinations I have seen and everything I have done in the past 3 weeks, I can only give you guys my point of view on what I consider to be the top 5 things to do in the Philippines. I tried to do some stuff, which is a bit uncommon. Yet, I also did some touristic things you just have to do when you visit the Philippines.

Trekking in Banaue

Trekking in Banaue and its whole area has to be mentioned under the top 5 things to do in the Philippines. Banaue lies in the north of Luzon – the main island of the Philippines. It is a 8-10 hour bus ride away from Manila. Make sure to bring warm and waterproofed clothes for the airconditioned bus and the mostly wet jungle. Banaue is an UNESCO World Heritage area, which is absolutely stunning in my opinion.

Basically, you can do guided tours, which lead you to many completely untouched places with 2.000 year old rice terraces in the middle of the jungle. The guides even bring you to some villages, with approximately 5 houses and 20 people living there. They live completely isolated, plant their own organic rice & veggies (one of the best meals I ever had – for less than 2,50 $.) and live an absolutely peaceful life. Really cool!

Banaue in north Luzon is definitely one of the top 5 things to do in the Philippines

Island hopping in El Nido

The second thing, which needs to be mentioned under the top 5 things to do in the Philippines is the island hopping in El Nido. El Nido itself reminds me a lot of Koh Phi Phi – a wasted paradise. It is full of boats, shops and tourism. Just to packed.

But what you can explore around El Nido is the ultimate paradise. An island tour costs you around 1.500 Peso (30 $). You can choose from 4 different variants – A,B,C and D. Or you just hire a private boat, which is also a good possibility.

The best tours suppose to be A and C. That’s the combination that we did as well. You will be brought to 5 different destinations via boat. Small Lagoon, Big Lagoon, Snake Island, etc.. You will stay at each place for about 1 hour and then head on to the next one. I could not decide, which stop is the best, because they are all just mind blowing. This trip will absolutely be something really special for you. Believe me…

Relaxing at Siquijor Island

Relaxing/ visiting Siqujor island is easily under the top 5 things to do in the Philippines in my opinion. There are countless of wonderful islands and beaches in this country, but Siquijor is on top of the list. We spent about 4 days there and stayed at “JJ’s Backpackers“ in San Juan. They have their own private beach, which suppose to be the cleanest one on the island and it is absolutely georgous.

Besides that, you can have a look at the Cambugahay waterfalls or go to Salagdoong beach, which is pretty cool. The water colour on any beach of the island is wonderful, but this one is extremly special. Additionally you can jump from a big tower, which is about 10 m high. Good fun!

Canyoning at the Kawasan Falls

Don’t forget the cayoning at the Kawasan Falls. It has to be under the top 5 things to do in the Philippines. This attraction can be found in the south of Cebu Island – 4 hours away from Cebu city. You can only get there by booking a tour. It will cost you between 1.300 – 1.500 Peso (26 – 30 $). You will probably have to do it with a big group. The guides take you through this incredibly beautiful canyon, where you can jump off rocks (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 m) and swim in light blue natural fresh water. Absolutely surreal!

Your trip will end at the famous Kawasan Falls, which are really nice to look at. The whole adventure will take about 6 hours and it is definitely something you have to do on the Philippines.

Scuba diving on Coron

Scuba diving on Coron might probably be one of the best things to do in this country and is easily under the top 5 things to do in the Philippines. Coron lies in the north of Palawan and south of Luzon. It takes a 45 minute flight from Manila to get there. Coron is this unbelievable island paradise, which exactly looks like heaven on earth. Trust me…

And it has some incredible diving spots. It is especially known for wreck diving. After the second world war, japanise ships tried to hide between all the small islands, but the Americans found and bombed them. The sunken ships can now be explored on scuba diving tours. Apparently there are just 2 places in the world where you can dive wrecks such as these ones. I have seen 3 of them (122 m, 100 m and 60 m long). Very, very impressive and a memory I will never forget!

Seeing the Sahara was a dream of mine for a long long time
.
When I finally realized it, I could not believe it
.
And I still can't... 🙈
.
Riding a camel for a couple hours, sleeping in a proper berber tent, having dinner and a jam session with the locals as well as watching the sunrise and the sunset was more than I ever expected 😍
.
So what does that show you ???
.
Simply that dreams come true❗
.
If you really believe in them, they will be reality one day
.
Just keep moving towards them all the time and you'll eventually arrive where you always wanted to be 💪

Everywhere you go, you see extraordinary landscapes with stunning sights that simply take your breath away 👌

  • Lost in the narrow alleys of Marrakesh 😍
.
I had a couple problems during my first two days in Morocco
.
When I arrived at the airport, the police took my drone away, because apparently you are not allowed to takes drones to this country
.
I also wasn't able to get a working navigation for the car that I have rented, so I had to sort it out in the city centre of Marrakesh, which wasn't that easy to be honest
.
Additionally I was not really prepared for the cold nights 😅
.
So it was quite a rough start
.
Nevertheless I have to say that I really like this Morocco so far❗
.
The food is great, during the day it's always sunny, the architecture is amazing and the people are incredibly friendly 😃
.
Today the REAL tour starts
.
I will leave Marrakesh and visit the highest waterfalls of Morocco in Ouzoud 😁
.
Sooo excited!
.
TELL ME: Do you have any other recommendations on what to see and do in Morocco???
.
Drop them in the comments! 😃

  • Is there anything better than a great sunset by a wonderful beach??? 😀🌅
.
I don't really know 😅
.
I have to admit, however, that I like a pretty sunrise a little more than a sunset to be honest
.
But why?
.
I guess, because a sunrise symbolises a new start 👌
.
A start to a new day
.
A start to a new week
.
A start to a new life
.
A start to whatever you want to be new
.
And that's what life comes down to a lot of times anyway, right? It's about starting things over and over again until they work out the way you want them to 💪
.
TELL ME: What do you like more, a sunset or a sunrise??? 😄
.

  • Portrait of a Filippino kid at Coron Island 👧
.
You guys already know that I often talk about what you can learn from travelling
.
THIS picture is the perfect example why I do that so often❗
.
Visiting the Philippines and especially seeing the local homeless kids in Coron made me learn something really valuable again
.
Even though these kids literally have nothing, they still seem very happy and they always have a smile on their face
.
The only thing you need to do is to wave, take a picture or just simply talk to them 📷
.
These kids taught me a lot about gratitude and happiness
.
Since I saw them, I try to be grateful for each and every single day, because I don't have to live under these kind of circumstances (and never had to)
.
Plus, if they can be happy with the life they live, then I can do it too!
.
Most people, including me, complain waaay to much about things that are not worth complaining about 😒
.
Sometimes it just needs a situation like seeing some homeless Filippino kids to put things in the right perspective again 🙏

  • Throwing stones around while sitting by a crystal clear swedish river in the middle of nowhere 🌲🙏
.
For me, this is the ultimate example for a perfect timeout
.
I don't know how you guys see it, but I feel that having a proper timeout once in a while gets more and more important in our modern world 🌏
.
Everything gets faster and faster every single day
.
Sometimes it's almost impossible to keep up with the pace
.
I am not saying that hustle or working hard is a bad thing (actually the opposite), but in oder to give a 100 %, you need to be fully focused and energized 💪
.
This is why I try to get my german ass to other countries as much as I can, to just simply be disconnected from the hustle and to recharge my batteries
.
For my next timeout I have Marocco on my list, starting from the upcoming sunday! 😀
.
I will climb North Africa's highest mountain, visit Marocco ' highest waterfall and ride camels through the desert
.
And all that to just simply get my head free and to enjoy life❗
.
TELL ME: How do you disconnected from daily life in the best possible way???
.
#sweden #naturephotography
  • One of the moments where I felt completely free was this one 🙏
.
Driving down the great ocean road with a couple of friends .
The pure feeling of freedom I had, was absolutely incredible for me and in my opinion, that's pretty much what every person should aim for 👌
.
Only a couple percent of humans on our planet really have this privilege of being free - time and money wise
.
Being able to decide how you want to spend your day, doing whatever you want to do, whenever you want to do it, without having anyone telling you that you can't, is the ultimate goal for me ⭐
.
And until I get there I try to get this feeling of freedom as much as I can to fuel my brain 👊
.
This is also why I like traveling so much, because you experience crazy things that give you this feeling
.
Why am I saying this???
.
Because I honestly think that we all need something in our lifes that keeps us going
.
For some it's driving a nice car
.
For others it's buying their own flat
.
For me, it's living life on my own terms
.
And this is why I can only recommend anyone, who thinks in a similar way, to travel foreign countries as much as possible, because it gives you a good glimpse of best feeling in the world - FREEDOM
.
