Sydney – A famous Metropolis by the Ocean

By on 21. December 2016

Sydney is a fascinating city. While I was travelling along the eastcoast of Australia I could spend some time Sydney and I was blown away. It really is a special place and there is a lot to see and to do…As you can read in the article about Melbourne I have to admit from the start, that I like Melbourne even more than Sydney, but still I find Sydney to be one of the most beautiful cities I have ver been to for many reasons. Obviously I can only share my memories and impressions on this place, but I think, that a lot of other travellers will see it the same way. Especially when you have lived in this city. I lived in Melbourne though. That is maybe the reason why I like even more ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sydney – A famous Metropolis by the ocean

As almost everyone knows, Sydney is very famous. That is why so many travellers want to see one time. About 20 years ago Sydney was not that popular as it is today. I think the Olympic Games in 2000 changed that a lot. People saw how wonderful and cool this city is. I only spent 1 week there, but I could already see why people love the biggest city of Australia so much.

Harbour bridge and Opera house

These two buildings are the flagships of Sydney. They are both located in the city centre and they are astonishing. When I saw the Opera house for the first time, it just blew my mind. I always dreamed about visiting this place one time. It looks so cool and is definitely a architectural highlight. Especially when it shines in different colours for various festive activities. It looks better from far away, than it does from a close up ๐Ÿ˜‰ (check that yourself).

The same thing happend to me with the Harbour bridge. This bridge just looks so cool and it is the biggest transition from the southern to the northern part of Sydney. Besides that you have an absolutely incredible view onto the whole harbour area when you visit the city centre. Just awesome!

The green Sydney

The second thing, which really fascinated me about this city is the fact that it is very green. And I do not only talk about a lot of green areas, parks, etc.. I mean the houses as well. I have seen some houses in Sydney where the goverment agencies tried to integrate something that I would consider as a “green concept” for cities. You will see a lot of skyscrapers covered in plants.

It did not only look cool, it is also good for the enviroment. They even want to build some green neighbourhoods in the northern part of the city. Really laudable! Additionally you will find a lot of parks, green areas and the wonderful botanic garden. I have seen a couple nice botanic gardens (the one in Melbourne for example), but the one in Sydney is the Nr. 1. Very recommandable!

A city surrounded by the ocean

During my time in Australia I learned a lot of lessons. Something that was not a lessons for me, but more of a self discovery of what I really like, is being by the ocean. And Sydney covers that completely. This city has countless different beaches. Not like Melbourne with one or two main ones. In Sydney you definitely have to see is the famous Bondi beach, but other good ones like Manly beach, Narrabeen, Dee Why, etc. as well.

At all of them you will find good restaurants, cafรฉs and bars to hang out. All of these beaches are nice for relaxing and surfing. It is good fun ๐Ÿ˜‰ Another good thing about Sydney in general is the proximity to the ocean itself. Because of that you always have good air, a pleasant climate and short distances to the shore.

Wonderful street art

Sydney is full of artists. Especially street art and music is a big thing there. When you walk through the city you will find various street artists and musicians creating something wonderful. I can remember this one dude playing his guitar… he did not want any money. He just played for fun and enjoyment. It was truely beautiful and everyone, who surrounded him, thought the same I think. There are some brilliant artists in this city and they definitely make Sydney a more livable place.

Happy and open minded people

Just like everywhere in Australia it seems like Sydney is full of happy people. Maybe it is because of the sun and the proximity to the ocean. Or it comes from the cool style and the diversity of this city. I do not know. But the people there always tend to smile and to be in a good mood, which is a great thing ๐Ÿ™‚

I also had the feeling, that the people are very open minded. Just like in Melbourne (maybe a little less) you will meet people with all different sorts of styles and heritages. You will find many people with tattoos, piercing, etc.. You will also see heeps of young people, who keep the city alive. Just a multicolored, cool mix out of everything.

Happy people everywhere including me

A modern city with good infrastructure

This is the same thing in every big australian city. Each and everyone of them is very modern. The style the cities have to them is far ahead than to other countries. Particularly the infrastructure is very up to date. You have a lot of options in Sydney and you get from one point to another pretty quick. You can use the train, the buses, the trams, the ferries and even bicycles for rent. It is quiet expensive to use these facilities, but Australia is an expensive country anyway. Nevertheless it is good to have all these possibilities.

Sydney’s city centre is easy to reach as well as every other place, because of the good infrastructure

Countless activities to do

When I was there, I have to admit, I only explored the main parts of the city and partied a lot ๐Ÿ™‚ I went to Bondi, the botanic garden, the city centre, etc. Everything you have to see. I also went to the Blue Mountains. But besides that, Sydney is full other activities. Some of them are well known. Others are more of an insider tip. You can for example take a helicopter tour, learn surfing, visit the Jenolan caves, spend a day in nature climbing parks, do an air balloon tour, go to the zoo, visit the aquarium and much more. You will definitely not be bored ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sydney has countless activities to do, just like surfing

Blue Mountains National Park – A great place to visit

But still, in the end there will always be the argument for travellers, if Melbourne or Sydney is the better city. I do like both a lot, even though my tendency goes towards Melbourne a little more, because I lived there for 3 month. It is a never ending story…
