Croatia: Canyons, Coastlines and National Parks – Part 3

By on 1. November 2016

We have already seen the wonderful Krka National Park Part 2, but we wanted to head on to see the canyons behind Omis, that we have discovered at the start of our trip. We did not really know what to expect, but our host told us that it’s an awesome place. So, we packed our daily bags, hopped in the car and got going 🙂

Omis – Cetina canyons

How to get there and what to bring

When I think of canyons, the first three things that come to my mind are „hot“, „big“ and „beautiful“. It pops up into my head immediately, because of Kings Canyon, which I have seen on my 1 year trip through Australia, Southeast Asia, Fiji and New Zealand. All these things lead me straight to what you should bring when you are going to explore any canyons. You definitely need good shoes, sun protecting clothes and lots of water and food. Usually when you hike through canyons (I had a lot of discussions about it in Australia), it’s gonna be really hot and exhausting. It’s not like a day trip in Disney Land 😉 So, make sure you are prepared.

Mountain ranges behind the canyons

In our case it was enough to bring lots of water, some food and a good camera, because we had a rented car. The good thing about the Cetina canyons is, that you can easily drive through it with a motorbike, a car or a normal bicycle. Normally that is unusual for canyons, but in this case it is a good opportunity in my opinion.

You will get to a lot of beautiful spots along the way much quicker and you will be able to see more. It is also the easier way to get to the canyons, because even though it is directly lying behind Omis, it would still be quite a distance to walk. So, using a vehicle is the better option in my opinion.

Perspective from Omis towards the canyons

Facts and activities

The Cetina canyons and the connecting parts have developed over thousends of years. Today we can see the fruits. These canyons go all along for several kilometers behind the mountain ranges towards the south. The Cetina river covers a distance of about 101 km and formed a fantastic, well rounded picture of nature. The river is also used for water and electricity supply. You gonna be suprised by the crystal clear water, big rocks, lakes, tunnels and waterfalls up to 40 m. Absolutely spectecular!

Awesome view along the Cetina river

Many different companies offer various activities. We did not do any of them, because we just wanted to explore the area on our own and see where it takes us. We ended up doing a small road trip through the canyons and took a look at them from a higher perspective. Many people do the activities though. They offer canyoning, boat tours on the river, cliff jumping, long hikes, rock climbing (with savety precautions) or rafting. Any person we spoke to recommends these activities and even our host said they are fun. Here is one of many adventure companies.

Phenomenal views and other sights

The further you walk or drive up the canyons the better the views you get. We drove up a curvy road towards the north and stopped a couple times to get some good pictures and videos that you can see in Part 1. What you gonna capture is something worth putting on postcards, for sure! When you reach the top you can also see a small pirate castle on the other side of the canyons – Part 5. We walked up there a couple days later. It was really cool, because from that point you have a perfect view over the canyons, the river and the stunning coastline. It’s the ultimate spot.

We heard from locals, that it is a good thing to drive even further north. There is a „mountain“ road waiting for you until you eventually reach the flatlands and Bosnia. If locals give you a tip, it is true almost every time 😉

Summarizing I can say, that visiting the canyons is definitely worth the time. I would even recommend to spend two days for that. One day to enjoy the views, exploring the area and maybe take some nice pictures. The second day to maybe do some offered activities, which is a lot of fun for one person, couples and families.

Now the coastline was waiting for us! 🙂

  • Admiring the beauty of Morocco's National Parks... 😍🌴
.
One thing I learned again on my trip through this country is that being able to visit places like this is a true privilege
.
I have seen many many poor people in Morocco
.
Actually the poorest of the poorest
.
I even had to give a 10 year old kid some food that I had left in my car, while he wanted to sell me some souvenirs to get money for his family 😕
.
This would never ever happen where I come from. It's actually illegal ☝
.
But there, people have to do it
.
This was one of many situations in Morocco that taught me about something about GRATITUDE again
.
Being grateful is so important, especially for people from privileged countries
.
We all tend to forget what kind of great lifes we actually have, because things like a child labour or example, doesn't even effect us in any way
.
Most of us can actually be more than grateful for the lifes we live and the countries we are able to travel because of the money we make❗
.
Every time I travel a new country I realize this more and more
.
And I am highly thankful for those lessons each and every time, because you really only learn them when you visit poor foreign places
.
The best thing about these lessons is that you learn to be able to put things into perspective... 🙏
.
So thanks to the beauty of Morocco
.
Thanks to the awesome people I met
.
And thanks for all the lessons I have learned again... 👌

  • Enjoying a bit of sunlight after coming back home to Hamburg 😊
.
I just came back from Morocco today and I can only highly recommend to visit this country ❗
.
From all of the places I have visited so far, Morocco is definitely on top of my list for many reasons
.
It is no suprise that it is getting more and more popular every year
.
Nevertheless I have to say that it feels good to be back home 💙
.
I really didn't want to leave Morocco though... 😟
.
I would have loved to travel it even more, but I know I will definitely come back
.
The good thing is, there is always a next destination to travel to... 😉
.
TELL ME: Anyone having any recommendations where to travel next???

  • Riding into the desert's sunset... 🐫😀
.
Seeing the Sahara was a dream of mine for a long long time
.
When I finally realized it, I could not believe it
.
And I still can't... 🙈
.
Riding a camel for a couple hours, sleeping in a proper berber tent, having dinner and a jam session with the locals as well as watching the sunrise and the sunset was more than I ever expected 😍
.
So what does that show you ???
.
Simply that dreams come true❗
.
If you really believe in them, they will be reality one day
.
Just keep moving towards them all the time and you'll eventually arrive where you always wanted to be 💪

  • So in love view with that top view of the Dades Gorge 😍
.
And this is only the tip of iceberg... 👌
.
The drive to this place was absolutely phenomenal
.
I literally had to stop 6 or 7 times within 30 minutes to takes pictures, because the views just absolutely amazed me 👍
.
On the way there I also picked up a moroccan local as well as a german traveller, that I spent the last three days with
.
The east of the atlas mountains is absolutely worth a trip and I can only highly recommend to come here 😊
.
I also already learned something again from the locals
.
ALL of them are incredibly friendly and they always try to help you with everything you ask them, even if they can barley speak one word of English
.
And if they can't explain properly, they take you to a friend or they try to communicate with hands and feet until you understand them 😄
.
Such a lovely bunch of people ❤
.
The kindess thry have and love they spread is Definetely something to adopt!
.

  • How wonderful are the Ouzoud waterfalls??? 😍
.
I really start to fall in love with Morocco slowly❗
.
At first I had to a couple task to master but now I like this country more and more
.
Everywhere you go, you see extraordinary landscapes with stunning sights that simply take your breath away 👌
.
The ouzoud waterfalls are one of them
.
They rise up to about 110m and they are just a short trip away from the Marrakesh
.
Definitely worth a trip!
.
I am only here since 6 days and I can already highly recommend to make this one of your top destinations to travel to in 2018 👍
.
TELL ME: Does anyone know some good spots to visit along the southern coastline? 😄
.

  • Lost in the narrow alleys of Marrakesh 😍
.
I had a couple problems during my first two days in Morocco
.
When I arrived at the airport, the police took my drone away, because apparently you are not allowed to takes drones to this country
.
I also wasn't able to get a working navigation for the car that I have rented, so I had to sort it out in the city centre of Marrakesh, which wasn't that easy to be honest
.
Additionally I was not really prepared for the cold nights 😅
.
So it was quite a rough start
.
Nevertheless I have to say that I really like this Morocco so far❗
.
The food is great, during the day it's always sunny, the architecture is amazing and the people are incredibly friendly 😃
.
Today the REAL tour starts
.
I will leave Marrakesh and visit the highest waterfalls of Morocco in Ouzoud 😁
.
Sooo excited!
.
TELL ME: Do you have any other recommendations on what to see and do in Morocco???
.
Drop them in the comments! 😃
